Metal L2: Upcoming Jovian Hardfork (Upgrade 17)

The Jovian Hardfork (Upgrade 17) is coming soon to Metal L2, aligning with the latest OP Stack release from OP Labs. This upgrade brings important network enhancements for performance, fee flexibility, and data availability (DA) protection.
As part of the Superchain ecosystem, Metal L2 will integrate these improvements to ensure continued stability, security, and compliance for institutional and DeFi partners building on our Layer 2.
We will publish the exact block height and timestamp for Metal L2 activation as soon as it’s confirmed.
📣 OP Labs Announcement: Jovian Upgrade Coming Soon
‼️📣 Announcement: Jovian Upgrade Coming Soon
The Jovian Hardfork (Upgrade 17) is coming to OP Stack chains. This upgrade includes:
Cannon Go 1.24 support — upgrading the on-chain fault proof virtual machine implementation to support Go 1.24.
Configurable Minimum Base Fee — allows chain operators to specify a minimum base fee to shorten the length of priority fee auctions (disabled by default).
DA Footprint Block Limit — adds an in-protocol limit to estimated DA usage of transactions to prevent DA spam and priority fee auctions. (enabled by default; can be disabled via zero scalar on-chain).
Operator Fee Fix — enables more flexible fee configurations for rollup operators and lays groundwork for future custom gas token support.
⚠️ If you are running operator fee with nonzero scalars, make sure to adjust them before activating the fork to avoid overcharging users.
⚠️ Breaking Changes
Block header changes:
extraData
field is extended (for the min base fee).blobGasUsed
may become nonzero when the DA footprint feature is enabled.
Please ensure your nodes and tooling can handle these updated header semantics. This applies to all node operators, particularly those running nodes for SCR chains with special steps for chain operators running permissionless fault proofs.
Non-SCR chains are unaffected unless they independently choose to schedule the fork.
🗓 Timeline
Activation is expected in the coming weeks, with:
Sepolia Superchain targeted for early November
Mainnet Superchain targeted for mid-November
Exact dates will be finalized shortly.
Official comms and a Notice Page will follow.
